CEDA PARTICIPATES IN THE 58TH PRISON DAY
ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATIONS
The Agency was given the opportunity to exhibit and sensitize Batswana on its mandate products and services at the 58th Prison Day anniversary celebrations held at Mahalapye Prisons Grounds on 14th May 2016. The celebrations began when scores of people cheered and ululated as the Guest of Honour, His Excellency President Lt Gen. Dr. Seretse Khama Ian Khama arrived. The celebrations were held under the theme ‘Building a more inclusive prison management-inspiring change’. The prisons day annual celebrations were graced by representatives from Prison Services from Lesotho and South Africa together with some Cabinet Ministers, Members of Parliament and Ntlo ya Dikgosi representatives.
In totality, His Excellency President Lt Dr. Gen. Seretse Khama Ian Khama awarded medals to 131 staff members who had displayed exceptional service and commitment to the Botswana Prison Service.
Ex-prisoners were invited to showcase how they had exploited the special skills they learned from prison to lead a law abiding and productive lives after their release from prison. This was mostly done through the display of hand-made products and artefacts which were put up for sale.
As was expected, the prisons band captivated the masses with their exquisite formations and choice of music. Ditiro Leero and other inmates also thrilled the audience with traditional music together with a few musical pieces from polka dancers.
For its part CEDA went further in sensitizing Batswana of its mandate when it made a presentation to inmates that were soon up for parole. The presentation was aimed at enlightening them on the potential of opening up businesses particularly to those that had the aspirations of starting afresh once integrated into society.
In its presentation CEDA highlighted that the Agency has previously funded inmates that had been released and there were a few success stories of their businesses. CEDA gave the prisoners hope that they too can make a success of themselves in spite of their wrong doings as they had paid their debt to society.
The Agency has always supported Prisons Day as it is a way of inspiring all members of society to make something of themselves regardless of their current situations.
